Now in its second generation, and recently updated for the 2015 model year, the Suzuki Swift has been an unmitigated success in South Africa since the original heralded the brand’s return to the country in 2008.

The addition of the 1.2 variants to the Swift family not only brings that nameplate’s undisputed attributes to a wider audience but also acknowledges the increasing demand for smaller-engined, fuel-efficient models that link affordability to quality, safety and comfort.

At the core of the Swifts design is both youthful and streamlined, accentuated by bold wheel arches and chunky proportions that place the wheels at the corners of the car to minimise overhangs while optimising the packaging and roominess of the cabin.

The finishes and materials continue the Swift’s reputation for quality and durability, while access to the 210-litre luggage compartment is convenient, thanks to the large-opening tailgate. The rear seatback can also be folded down to expand the Swift’s cargo carrying capacity to a generous 533 litres.

The new 1.2-litre engine has a rated maximum power output of 63 kW at 6 000 r/min, linked to torque peak of 113 Nm at 4 500 r/min. The variable valve timing optimises torque and power across the rev range in the interests of optimum response and efficiency.

Suzuki’s well known 1.4-litre engine is retained in the range and has a rated maximum power output of 70 kW at 6 000 r/min, coupled to a 130 Nm torque peak at 4 000 r/min.

Safety items; dual front airbags and ABS are available as standard on all Suzuki Swift models.
